which water is pumped from the oropharyngeal chamber, across the gills and into the parabranchial chambers. At the same time, blood is pumped through the gills, where it picks up oxygen from the water and loses carbon dioxide. The movement of water across the gills involves the action of two pumps: a pressure pump that pushes water across the gills from the oropharyngeal to the parabranchial cavity, and a suction pump that draws water across the gills from the oropharyngeal into the parabranchial chamber (Hughes and Morgan, 1973). A synchrony between these two pumps can theoretically yield a continuous flow of water across the gills in spite of discontinuous flow into the mouth and out of the gill slit(s). The blood flow in the respiratory structures of the gills (secondary lamellae) is in the opposite direction to that of water (Grigg and Read, 1971; Scheid and Piiper, 1976). The continuous flow of water across the gills requires two cyclical pumps; one must be active while the other is refilling. The buccal pressure pump is clearly present in all fishes; however, the suction pump is not. In the bony fishes (Osteichthyes), abduction of the operculum serves as the suction pump (Hughes, 1960b; Hughes and Shelton, 1958). It is less obvious in cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes) where the motive force for the suction pump comes from, although the elastic recoil of the branchial skeleton and small muscles that extend the elements of the gill arch may be responsible (Hughes and Ballintijn, 1965). Flow is difficult to measure inside a fish’s head, so relative pressures in the oropharyngeal and parabranchial (or opercular) cavities have been used as an indicator of flow direction. In experiments on bony and cartilaginous fishes, these measures of pressure have been used to indicate that the dominant flow pattern is a continuous, 1577 The Journal of Experimental Biology 204, 1577–1587 (2001) Printed in Great Britain © The Company of Biologists Limited 2001 JEB3366

Mechanics of ventilation in swellsharks, Cephaloscyllium ventriosum (Scyliorhinidae).

A simple two-pump model has served to describe the mechanics of ventilation in cartilaginous and bony fishes since the pioneering work of G. M. Hughes. A hallmark of this model is that water flow over the gills is continuous. Studies of feeding kinematics in the swellshark Cephaloscyllium ventriosum, however, suggested that a flow reversal occurred during prey capture and transport. Given that ...

A Study of the Effect of Temperature Changes on the Respiratory Pumps of the Rainbow Trout

The pumping mechanism maintaining water flow across the gills has been investigated in the trout using pressure transducers and cine analysis (Hughes & Shelton, 1957, 1958). It was shown that the mechanism could be considered as being made up of a buccal pressure pump and opercular suction pumps, the two being separated functionally by the gill resistance. In this species, Salmo gairdneri, the ...

Oxygen consumption and gill water flow in the dogfish Scyliorhinus canicula L.

When sharks and dogfish are at rest on the sea bottom, gill ventilation is produced by the action of the branchial musculature and elastic recoil of the visceral skeleton (Hughes & Ballintijn, 1965). Water flows across the gills as a result of an increase in pressure in front of the gills and of suction behind them. During the swimming of some related forms such as the leopard shark, Triakis se...

Influence of Cypermethrin on DNA and RNA Content in Different Organs of Fresh Water Fish Cyprinus carpio

In this study, freshwater fish Cyprinus carpio was exposed to sub lethal concentration of synthetic pyrethroids insecticide cypermethrin to evaluate the impact on nucleic acids in different organs. Fishes were exposed to sub lethal concentration (1/10th of LC50 value) of cypermethrin for three different durations, 7, 14 and 21 days. In seven day exposed fishes, DN...

The dimensions of fish gills in relation to their function.

It is known from the extensive measurements of Gray (1954) that the gills of marine fishes of the Atlantic Coast of North America show a wide variation in the extent of their gill area. This is true whether the area is based on the unit of body surface area or on a unit of body weight. Little data are available, however, for fishes from European waters (Byczkowska-Smyk,* 1957, 1958, 1959)The pr...
